Features and benefits

VisualAge Pacbase offers an integrated development environment (IDE) with advanced tools and features, including:

Central enterprise repository
Stores, manages, and controls enterprise application development data; enables you to access, share, and reuse non-redundant and consistent information across teams and projects; provides version control; ensures traceability of information; and allows you to perform impact analysis when implementing changes.

Analysis and design support
Provides support for a variety of methodologies including Merise, YSM, SSADM and OMT; offers UML support via the interface with XMI-based UML modelling tools; ensures continuity along the development process and enables developers, at construction time, to reuse objects defined at upper level to ensure consistency with the software architecture design.

e-business construction tools
Covers the development and generation of remote Cobol server components that can run on a wide range of mainframe, Unix, and PC platforms; automatically generates a Proxy object to facilitate their integration with the middle-tier application logic, and reduce development workload for the middle-tier and presentation layer construction. Proxy objects can be produced in the form of Java components, EJB type components or C++/COM/OCX objects.

RAD support
Covers the generation of J2EE-based navigation and presentation components; leverages information coming from the repository or from relational databases; provides application models to increase development productivity.

Service test facility
Offers ability to test the overall behaviour of the server components independently from the middle-tier logic and presentation layer construction; increases role integration among multi-background teams, and can be used by any of the development staff whatever their task and skills.

Web services and XML support
Helps build Web services based on open, cross-platform standards, such as UDDI, SOAP and WSDL; provides a top-down approach to define, model, and generate all components needed for publication, test and execution of Web services: Java, WSDL, XML schema, documentation; leverages information stored in the repository to improve productivity and consistency.

Integration with IBM WebSphere Studio Application Developer
Provides effective integration with IBM WebSphere Studio Application Developer Version 5.0 to produce the Java application logic and the presentation layer for e-business applications; enables developers from WebSphere Studio Application Developer to directly access the proxy objects and benefit from the service test facility.

Integration facilities for legacy applications and services
Enables development teams to reuse and integrate existing application assets into new e-business systems; offers various integration options depending on the nature of the existing asset and the context in which it can be reused.

Traditional build facility
Covers the development and generation of batch transaction processing and reporting as well as online applications; Automatically generates full source code, database descriptions, documentation, and provides native access to an impressive number of databases. Applications can run on multiple platforms, operating systems and TP monitors.
