Overview

IBM® Rational® System Architect® XT is a Web-based enterprise architecture (EA) and business process reporting platform that works in conjunction with Rational System Architect. These two solutions share a common repository, enabling complete enterprise support for your actionable architecture. Because these solutions work together, extended teams have assurances that the data they are working with is accurate and current. The Rational System Architect XT and Rational System Architect solutions address all aspects of an organization’s enterprise architecture from modeling to publishing, analysis, and execution.

There are typically two types of enterprise architecture user groups: co-located enterprise architecture teams that need a solution to support complex modeling, simulation, and execution, and extended teams that require architecture analysis, custom reporting, and lightweight modification in real time. The Rational System Architect XT environment provides the extended team with the analytical tools they need to:

  • Analyze and maintain the enterprise architecture repository in real time through a Web-based interface

  • Leverage pre-defined templates to promote effective decision-making at all levels of the organization

  • Personalize sessions for easy data access

  • Minimize user training and eliminate client installation (server installation only)

  • Configure the user interface and navigation browser

  • Support existing System Architect repositories

  • Search for common artifacts

  • Provide role-based access to control viewing and update usage

Enterprise decision support

IBM® Rational® System Architect® XT includes predefined templates for the commercial, private sector, federal agencies, and the Department of Defense that allow for architecture analysis support with little, if any, modification. Analysis templates provide multiple views into the organization – strategic, operational, and technical – and focus on the information needed to promote effective decision-making at each level. Users have direct access to architecture models or alternative views, such as pie charts, bar charts, and Gantt charts, for trend analysis and diagnostics regarding overall architecture health.

Global architecture access

The IBM® Rational® System Architect® XT environment enables an organization to share its architecture across the enterprise. Subject matter experts and business professionals can now view, in real time, their own specific architecture artifacts. Where appropriate, users can update the architecture through a Web browser, minimizing the need for enterprise-wide tool training and deployment. Because Rational System Architect XT uses encrypted HTTP (HTTPS) and supports Unicode characters, an organization can share its architecture over an intranet or the Internet, helping to create a global decision support platform for extended teams.

Transforming data into information

The IBM® System Architect® XT solution presents the architecture to users in sessions configurable to their role and analysis needs. Features such as bookmarks help simplify navigation to the information that users frequently need. The embedded search engine helps users locate common architecture artifacts quickly and easily. Because architecture navigation is performed through a standard Web browser, little or no training is required to access architecture data, helping the entire enterprise to benefit and transfer knowledge.

System requirements

Rational System Architect XT 11.3.1 System Requirements

  • Supported operating systems:
    - Microsoft® Windows Vista® (with SP 1)
    - Microsoft® Windows® XP (with SP 2 or 3)
    - Microsoft Windows Server 2008
    - Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition (with SP 2)
    - Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition 32-bit (with SP 2)

  • Minimum system requirements:
    - Administrative privileges on the system (during installation only).
    - Pentium®-class PC, 500 Mhz or higher, minimum of 256 MB of RAM, Super VGA monitor (with the screen resolution set to at least 800 x 600, small fonts setting).
    - Disk space: 2 GB during installation and 300 MB after the install is complete.
    - The latest service packs and system upgrades available from Microsoft.
    - Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 and 7.0.
    Note: You do not have to use Internet Explorer as your browser. If you do use Internet Explorer, you can download the latest version from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/default.mspx.

  • Each site requires at least one copy of regular Rational System Architect® 11.3.1 installed on a machine other than the server on which Rational System Architect XT is installed. Rational System Architect creates and manages encyclopedias.

For the Server running Rational System Architect XT:

  • Microsoft IIS version 5.1 on Windows XP, or Microsoft IIS version 6.0 on Windows Server 2003.

  • .Net Framework 2.0, or .Net Framework 3.5 (installs 2.0).

  • Memory requirement is dependent on the anticipated number of concurrent users. Currently the system uses 60Mb for the first user and then 40Mb per additional user.

  • Each SA XT session will require 37KB of Desktop heap.

  • High speed network connection between the SA XT server and the SQL/Oracle Database server.

For all client machines accessing information through Rational System Architect XT:

  • Microsoft Windows XP (SP2), Windows XP (SP3), or Windows Vista SP1

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 (or higher).

  • Mozilla Firefox 3.0 (or higher).

  • Java™ Runtime Environment Minimum version required is JRE 1.5. Older versions of the JRE render SVG diagrams incorrectly and cause them to display an Applet Loading message.

  • IBM JRE V5 and IBM JRE V6 are supported, but they are not required.

  • May have standard Rational System Architect installed, but it is not required.
