Multi-site Workload Lifeline enables intelligent load balancing of TCP/IP workloads across two sites at unlimited distances to provide nearly continuous availability.
Utilizes server application health, availability, and system image capacity; in combination with two tiers of load balancing; to allow distribution of an enterprise’s workloads across applications on a system, systems within a site’s sysplex, or even across sites. Intelligent load balancing offers:
- Increased performance: Response time is reduced by ensuring new connections for a workload are distributed to the applications and systems most capable of handling them
- Increased availability: New connections for a workload can be routed to available servers even in the event of server, sysplex, system, or site outages
- Increased scalability: Server instances can be added on demand
- Analytic capability: Network Management Interface (NMI) provides access to workload, site, and server status information
- Reduction of Recovery Time Objective from hours to minutes
- Workload migration: Ability to move workloads from one site to the other with minimal disruption

The IBM Multi-site Workload Lifeline V1.1 is a new offering that is an integral part of the Active-Standby configuration of GDPS Active/Active continuous availability.
IBM GDPS Active/Active continuous availability is the next generation of GDPS and a fundamental paradigm shift from a failover model to a near continuous availability model. IBM GDPS Active/Active continuous availability combines the best attributes of the existing suite of GDPS services and expands them to allow you to achieve unlimited distances between your data center sites with recovery time objectives measured in seconds.
IBM GDPS Active/Active continuous availability is a solution for an environment consisting of two or more sites, separated by unlimited distances, running the same applications and having the same data with cross-site workload monitoring and balancing. IBM GDPS active/active continuous availability, as with previous GDPS solutions, provides a complete set of services to help achieve near continuous availability. This solution, which is an integration of IBM products and GDPS control software, is delivered through an IBM service engagement which includes project management throughout the implementation cycle.
ACTIVE/STANDBY CONFIGURATION
A workload managed by IBM GDPS Active/Active continuous availability will be active in one site, receiving transactions routed to it by the IBM Multi-site Workload Lifeline, the workload distribution mechanism. When database updates are made, software replication will copy the changed data from the active instance of the workload to the standby instance of the workload. At the standby site, all the infrastructure components, LPARs, z/OS images, middleware, and applications are ready to receive work. The updated data from the active site is applied to the database subsystem running in the standby site in real time
